If you’re a property owner looking for a mid-size tractor to get more demanding chores done, chances are you’ve come across two competitive options: the John Deere 5100E and the Kubota M5-111. Side-by-side, these two tractors look pretty similar: Both have four-cylinder engines with right around 100 horsepower, hydrostatic power steering and a wide variety of implement and attachment options to make sure you’re getting work done at a maximum productivity level. So what are the differentiating factors between the John Deere 5100E and the Kubota M5-111? Here’s what you need to know:

John Deere 5100E: A Heavier Tractor

The first thing to know is that the John Deere 5100E is a heavier tractor by more than a half ton. Weighing in at 8,150 pounds, this extra weight gives you added stability and counterweight when you’re moving a load across less-than-perfect ground. By contrast, the Kubota four-wheel drive cab weighs in at 7,033 pounds – and you’ll immediately notice a difference in the way it handles a full load across uneven ground.

Operator-Friendly Considerations

Are you planning on having more than one person use your mid-size tractor? If so, the John Deere 5100E consistently ranks highly for its user-friendliness. Easy-to-understand pedals and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel are handy features that make the tractor easy to learn and operate. Additionally, the ReGen process on the Deere happens automatically; an inexperienced operator probably won’t even realize it’s happening. On the Kubota, however, the ReGen process requires operator input.

And when it comes to the cab, both models offer a roomy, comfortable, climate-controlled experience. All options offered for the M5-111 come standard on a John Deere 5100E – except for the sunroof! You’d need to add that on as an upgrade for the 5100E.

Components

Finally, one of the last major things worth noting is the differing size of components between the John Deere 5100E and Kubota M5-111. When compared to the John Deere, the M5-111 has undersized components such as radiator and oil coolers, which leads to shorter service intervals and higher operating costs. Additionally, features like 120A alternator, creep gear and 540E come standard on the 5100E but are optional upgrade features on the Kubota.
