Fall Food Plot Prep: The Best Implements for Wildlife and Pasture Projects
8/26/2026
As the temperatures start to drop in Texas and fall sets in, it’s time to start thinking about food plot preparation for deer, turkey, and other wildlife–or to refresh pastures for livestock. With the right equipment, food plot prep and pasture management can be quick and effective whether you’re managing a few acres for hunting or running a large cattle operation. Read on to learn our key steps to get the job done.
The best implements are worthless if they aren’t paired with a tractor that can operate them. John Deere’s compact utility tractors offer the power and versatility needed for food plot and pasture management.
Why Prep in Fall?
Fall prep ensures that your soil is ready for Texas’s winter moisture, giving seed a solid foundation for a successful growth season in spring. For wildlife managers, it also creates necessary food sources during hunting season and reduces supplemental feed costs throughout the winter.
Disk Harrows: For breaking up tough soil and incorporating organic matter–available in sizes compatible with all John Deere compact tractors
Rotary Tillers: Ideal for smaller plots–pair with a John Deere 1025R or 2025R for easy tillage in tight spaces
Broadcast Spreaders: Ideal for even distribution of seed across food plots and pastures–doubles as a fertilizer applicator, making them versatile year round
Core Aerators: Help to improve soil fertility, air flow, and overall health
Pendulum Spreaders or Broadcast Spreaders: Evenly apply fertilizer across acreage, ensuring clover, rye, or oats are receiving the nutrients they need
Seeding Tools: Consider overseeders or drills for precise placement of even larger seed varieties
Cultipackers: Roll over the seedbed to press seed into soil–this improves germination rates
Rotary Cutters: For long-term food plot management, a rotary cutter keeps plots from getting overgrown and helps to promote and manage regrowth.
The John Deere 1025R is a top choice for smaller food plots and tighter properties. Quick-attach loaders and mid-mount PTO options make it a versatile choice well beyond planting season.
Check out the John Deere 2038R for a step up in power. This machine is perfect for landowners working with several acres of wildlife habitat.
The John Deere 4066R is a great option for larger properties, with plenty of horsepower and hydraulic flow for bigger implements.
